Product Description

Enjoy impressive yields and quality with Asparagus ‘Mondeo’, a versatile all-male hybrid suitable for both spring and autumn planting. This variety has garnered significant interest thanks to its early season performance and delicious spears, which boast tight tips throughout the growing period. Renowned for its excellent flavour and good disease resistance, ‘Mondeo’ is a must-have for the discerning gardener.Prior to receiving your crowns, ensure permanent asparagus beds are prepared without delay. Dig trenches 20cm (10") deep and 30cm (12") wide, then enrich the base with a 7cm (3") layer of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Create a ridge of soil on top of this, and position the asparagus crowns 45cm (18") apart, draping their roots over the ridge's edge. Cover the crowns with 7cm (3") of soil, firming them gently. Select a sunny, sheltered location with richly fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to enhance soil structure and fertility, ensuring all weeds are removed. On cold, wet soils, sharp sand or grit can be added to improve drainage. In autumn, cut back any yellowing foliage and mulch the crowns with well-rotted manure to shield them from frost. Feed with a general fertiliser each March. Weed asparagus beds by hand to avoid damaging the shallow roots. During hot spells, water regularly to prevent drying.Resist harvesting spears in the first season, allowing the plants to establish foliage. In the second year, a limited harvest can be taken during April and May when spears reach 15cm (6"). By the third year, a full harvest can be enjoyed. To maintain plant vigour, it is recommended to cease cutting from the end of May, allowing shoots to develop into foliage. While later harvests are possible, they may weaken the plant.
