For those with limited space, it can be easily pruned to maintain your desired shape and size.For optimal growth, plant your magnolias in a sunny or semi-shaded location, sheltered from cold winds and harsh spring frosts. These plants thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Before planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish more quickly when their roots are shaded. After planting, mulch with rotted bark chips, manure, or garden compost, being careful not to mound it around the stem. When planting in a patio container, use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young magnolias are fully established.
